This Read Me provides information about Chronomenon, version 1.0, and its accompanying documents.
What Chronomenon Is and What It Does
Chronomenon is a software alarm clock and timer which can crow, speak, and play QuickTime movies when its alarm goes off. That means you have a choice of three alarms. You can have one, two, or all alarms sound at once.
If Chronomenon crows, a little rooster appears in a screen in Chronomenon 's clock face while the background of the screen flashes once with each crow. Chronomenon 's clock face is a little object only a few inches (or centimeters) long and wide which can be positioned anywhere on the screen, or even made invisible.
If Chronomenon is set to speak, that means Chronomenon can speak a short message that you supply to it, using whatever voice on your computer that you choose. This is a good feature if you need a reminder about what the alarm was set for in the first place or need to be reminded of some details, like what the street address of the place you were supposed to visit was, or whom you were supposed to call. The message is also displayed in Chronomenon 's clock.
Do you want Chronomenon 's alarm to use your own sounds or MIDI files? QuickTime, Apple Computer's movie-playing technology, can convert sound and standard MIDI files to QuickTime movies, and QuickTime movies, even motion-picture QuickTime movies, can be played by Chronomenon.
Chronomenon runs in the background, so you can do anything else on the computer while Chronomenon minds the time and the alarm. Chronomenon always displays the current time, so Chronomenon can be used as just a clock for looking at to see what time it is. Whenever the alarm is set, though, Chronomenon also shows the hours, minutes, and seconds left until——as well as the date on which——the alarm will go off. This is an especially good feature for when you are using Chronomenon as a timer.
Not only can you choose the voice you want Chronomenon to use to speak your messages, and not only can you add your own alarm sound by using QuickTime movies, but you can also change the color of Chronomenon 's time display and messages.
These customizations and more are saved so that each time Chronomenon runs, you have it configured just the way you want it.
Chronomenon makes a good startup item, meaning that an alias of it can be put in the computer's Startup folder so that Chronomenon is automatically launched every time the computer is turned on.
Chronomenon will bring you complete happiness! Whoops! Chronomenon is not designed to bring you complete happiness (maybe it will, maybe it won't). I got carried away.
Chronomenon brought me complete happiness, though! It was fun to make! Chronomenon has been tested a lot, and I believe it should work as advertised. However, if it doesn't do what it should, let me know. I'll try to fix any problems. Suggestions are welcome too. See the section of this document towards the bottom titled "Addresses" to find out where to send me two different kinds of mail.
The Things that Should Accompany the Application Chronomenon
Upon receipt, everything that comes with the application Chronomenon should be in a folder entitled Chronomenon Folder, and so should the application itself. These are the three things that are supposed to be in the folder:
1) the application Chronomenon, version 1.0,
2) a document entitled Chronomenon——Read Me First (you are now reading this), and
3) a document entitled Chronomenon and QuickTime.
What You Need in Order to Use Chronomenon
To use Chronomenon, you will need a Macintosh computer running System 7 or greater, Sound Manager 3.0 or greater, and about 1,500 kilobytes of memory free for running applications. If you have PlainTalk speech-synthesis software from Apple installed, Chronomenon will be able to speak messages when its alarm goes off. If QuickTime is installed, Chronomenon will be able to play movies when its alarm goes off.
What You Should Know in Order to Use Chronomenon
You should know how to use the Macintosh computer.
What to Do After Reading This Document
Read Chronomenon 's on-line guide to find out about Chronomenon 's features. To access this guide, launch Chronomenon and then choose the menu item Information on Chronomenon from the Help (?) menu. After that, since Chronomenon is able to play QuickTime movies, to get some information about using QuickTime movies in Chronomenon, you should read the document titled Chronomenon and QuickTime, located in the folder titled Chronomenon Folder. Then you should be all set to use Chronomenon.

Chronomenon is licensed to each user for free (though a voluntary payment is requested; see the "Payment" section above). Chronomenon may be copied and distributed by you as long as it is unaltered, is distributed in a folder titled Chronomenon Folder, and the folder also contains one unaltered copy of each document listed in the section of this document titled "The Things that Should Accompany the Application Chronomenon. " This folder may not contain anything else. Copies of Chronomenon may not be transferred to anyone for a fee without prior written permission from the creator of Chronomenon, who owns and holds the rights to Chronomenon.
